This morning I was reading in 2 Samuel 23 and I am so grateful for David’s words. He knows that he has fallen short of how He and his house should have lived. He knows that he cannot earn God’s favor. However he also knows that God loves him and will bless Him because he knows God’s nature and His character is to fulfill the covenant He made with David.
God’s love and plans to bless us are not based on our performance, goodness or actions. His grace to us is based on His choice. We can walk in assurance of His love because He is good. The Bible says that He is not a man that He would lie, which means He will do exactly what He said He would.
David knew that God’s love was unconditional and even though he at times made some really bad choices he knew that God loved him. In fact we often to see David crying out to God because of those bad choices asking for forgiveness.
David is referred to as “a man after God’s own heart” This phrase doesn’t mean that his heart was like God but rather that He pursued God. This was the major difference between Saul and David. Saul was focused on pleasing man. He always wanted to look good before the people. David repeatedly and passionately seeks God despite what the people thought.
The good news of this passage is that God is faithful to love us and bless us. He has already paid the price for us to be fully accepted into His family. He does not base His love on us but on His covenant.
“The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, Like the tender grass springing out of the earth, By clear shining after rain.’ “Although my house is not so with God, Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all my desire; Will He not make it increase?”
