When God Speaks

Have you ever wondered what happens when God speaks over a circumstance? I know that we often are seeking God for a breakthrough. We sometimes long for Him to show His power in a particular situation; to see Him step in and bring change to something but sometimes we limit how we think that will happen and when things don’t appear to our expectations we get disappointed.

In John 2:1-11 Jesus’ mother sought out her son to ask for such a change. She asked him to do something for her when the wedding ran out of wine. His response was to ask her why she involved him in the matter. Instead of walking away disappointed she left servants there and told them to do whatever he said. It was then that Jesus saw the jars used for ceremonial washing and gave them instructions.

“Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

Now Jesus didn’t explain to the servants what He was going to do He simply instructed them to draw out water and serve it to the master of the banquet. I have always wondered at what point did that water transform into wine? Was it as they walked it to the master or as he sipped it? We don’t really know and I think this was intentional because truthfully when we are trusting Him to move in our situation we don’t really know when or how He plans to change things either.

Another thing that has always struck me about this passage is that we never know how He is going to move in our circumstances. Like Mary we are just to be confident that He will move and to be prepared for whatever He does. The servants didn’t ask him to explain how this dirty water that had been used to clean dust and grime from those attending the wedding was going to please the master of the wedding. They didn’t pour some into their hands to see that it had been changed. They stepped out in obedience and faith in who Jesus was and served it.

In this passage we often miss an important fact Jesus literally stepped past our physical understanding to change the water at a molecular level into the finest of wines. Below are two pictures one is a water molecule and one is a wine molecule. Jesus made that change at a foundational level and changed it forever. Often times we miss that Jesus has done the same thing with us and He can and will do the same thing in circumstances for which we are seeking him for breakthrough.

What should we remember from this?

  1. when we seek His change don’t tie Him to respond in our time or the way we expect. He is God and regardless of how He brings it about He has the best in store for us and for those we love.

  2. Don’t question His directions but step out in faith and trust the result to Him.

  3. Nothing is too hard for Him. There is nothing that is beyond His ability to impact or redeem. He can even transform molecules! When He speaks the very building blocks of Heaven and Earth listen.
