The White Stone

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.”

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I recently found myself pondering this passage and the significance of the white stone.  It seems like a small detail and its significance can be overlooked but all Scripture is God breathed which means He has meaning in every word. So I started doing some research and praying for wisdom. I love that God uses “small” things to speak HUGE truth!

Firstly, in the ancient Jewish Supreme Court (the Sanhedrin), judges voted on guilt or innocence using stones or pebbles, a process frequently detailed in the Talmud. Judges cast smooth pebbles into an urn to register their verdict. White stones signified acquittal (innocence), while black or dark stones signified condemnation (guilt).

Secondly, there are many verses that talk about our sins being cleansed and using the color white to represent our forgiveness and freedom.

What does the new name mean? Well Jesus gave Simon a new name and he became Peter.  It marked a new identity and a new place of relationship with Jesus.

In the ancient world, names represented character and destiny. Because the stone and its name are known only to God and the recipient, it signifies deep personal intimacy and an unbreakable bond. It is a mark of the covenant thy God established through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

So this small statement changes everything. It shows that our sins have been judged and that we have been found innocent because of Jesus’ sacrifice. It also serves as a sign of God’s covenant blessing lavished on us.

The name written on the stone is who God has always known us to be. It conveys destiny and intimate relationship with God. I also think the use of a stone is reflective of the altars God would have people build as a memorial of what He has done. In this instance it isn’t so much for others to see as it is the capstone for us to stand on and remember who we are in Him.
